The Chris Eaton Foundation held its second annual Coach Chris Eaton Memorial 3v3 Basketball Tournament on Saturday. The event was once again a success as people gathered to remember former Sandia Baseball Coach Chris Eaton by playing another game he loved: basketball.
The Chris Eaton Foundation has made it their mission to help student-athletes in New Mexico with mental, physical, and emotional support. The foundation also gave out its first scholarship in June, and the recipient of that scholarship was in attendance on Saturday morning at Sandia Prep for the memorial basketball tournament. Ava Estes is a Cibola High School grad and is currently a freshman at the University of Miami.
“This scholarship meant everything to me. My goal for as long as I can remember has been to be a doctor in the medical field, and this foundation means everything and their mission is inspiring,” said Ava Estes.
This foundation was started by Chris Eaton’s family, and his brother Michael says that the foundation and helping student-athletes from New Mexico has become a passion.
“What it means to us is, when you talk to Ava, and you see her path of becoming a neonatal surgeon, and the kind of impact that can have, not only on her but whoever her services are eventually going to touch. It becomes real, and you start to realize like, ‘Wow, we are making an impact,’” said Michael Eaton.
Michael is excited for what is to come this year, as the foundation is announcing new partnerships and tools for student-athletes to better themselves. The foundation is also adding two more scholarships for 2025.
“We are going to give out three scholarships this upcoming year. We are going to keep that 10,000 dollar one, so impactful, and then we are going to give a 5,000 and then a 2,500. So, it’s only fueled by the donations and the supporters, and that is the only reason we can award this money. It’s all about giving back to the kids; that’s what Chris was about. That’s what he prided himself on, and that is what the Chris Eaton Foundation is about. You know, we want to support and help the mental physical, and emotional health of our student-athletes,” said Michael Eaton.
