Women in STEM Scholarships

Gratefully supported by the British Council, Durham University is delighted to announce five fully funded scholarships for female students from Mexico interested in pursuing master’s studies in the 2025/26 academic year.

Applications from women whose identities include multiple intersecting factors, including race, class, religion and women who are single mothers are particularly welcome.

To be eligible for the British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM, you must:

  • Be a woman (cis-gendered or trans) or identify as non-binary;
  • Be a passport holder and permanent resident of Mexico;
  • Have submitted an academic application to study on one of the eligible Durham University postgraduate programmes, as listed above;
  • Have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry onto a postgraduate programme at Durham University by the time you submit your application and be due to start your postgraduate programme in the UK during 2025;
  • Have not previously studied at a degree level or higher in the UK or lived recently in the UK;
  • Meet the English Language requirements of your chosen Master’s programme at Durham University;
  • Demonstrate your case for financial support;
  • Not receive financial support or funding towards your study programme in the UK from any other source and not be able to privately fund your UK studies;
  • Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your scholarship award has ended.

Other Criteria:

You are also required to show in your application form that:

  • You are active in the field with work experience or with a proven interest in the programme area you are applying for;
  • You are willing to demonstrate future contribution to capacity-building and socio-economic advancement through the benefits achieved after graduating from UK higher education and returning to your home country;
  • You can demonstrate a plan and passion to engage other women and girls in STEM from your home country;
  • You agree to your data being shared with the British Council for purposes of assessment and promotional activity, as a condition of applying for the bursary.

If you are awarded a scholarship, you agree to maintain contact with the British Council act as an ambassador for the UK, and engage with activities as part of a British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM alumnus, during and after your study in the UK. Any involvement in these activities during your study in the UK will take up no more than five hours per term.

 

You are NOT eligible for a British Council Scholarship if you:

  • Hold dual British citizenship;
  • Are an employee, a former employee, or relative (*) of an employee of Her Majesty’s Government (including but not limited to: British Embassies/High Commissions; Department for Business and Trade (DBT), the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT); Department for International Trade; the Ministry of Defence; and the Home Office)
  • Are an employee, a former employee, or a relative (*) of an employee of the British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM-eligible countries;
  • (*) Relatives are defined as parents or stepparents, siblings or stepsiblings, children or stepchildren, spouse, civil partner or unmarried partner (where the couple has been in a relationship akin to marriage or civil partnership for at least two years);
  • Are currently in receipt of financial support or funding towards your study programme in the UK from any other source;
  • Have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship or a UK institutional scholarship/financial bursary, or if you privately funded your UK studies?

How to apply

  1. Apply for a course by 1st April 2025

    Please ensure you have submitted an academic application, with all supporting documents (proof of English Language, academic transcripts, references, etc. – correctly translated), via the postgraduate online application portal for one of the eligible programmes by midnight (GMT) 1st April 2025 . If you have any issues with submitting any of these documents by the indicated deadline, please contact us via international.scholarships@durham.ac.uk and we will do our best to support you.

     

    Important: When completing your postgraduate online academic application form for your programme of study: In the section of ‘Funding’ please answer ‘Yes’ to the question ‘Have you either applied or are going to apply for a scholarship?’ Then select ‘British Council Women in STEM Scholarship PGT’ from the drop-down menu. The deadline to pay the deposit to secure your place at Durham University if you receive an offer will be postponed till after the result of this scholarship is released only if you have indicated you are applying to this scholarship in your application form.

  2. Complete & send the Scholarship Form by 30th April 2025

    In addition to submitting the academic application above, please complete the British Council Women in STEM Scholarship Online Application Form by midnight (GMT) 30th April 2025.

    Please note that the scholarship form is currently under review, and is expected to be released in early March 2025. Please come back to check for any updates.

     

  3. More about this scholarship

    Accommodation will be provided in one of three Durham University Colleges, Hatfield CollegeTrevelyan College, or Ustinov College.

    Hatfield and Trevelyan Colleges are both home to a diverse mix of undergraduates and postgraduate students, the first being Durham’s second-oldest college, and the second a historically all-female college, with a strong ethos around championing and development of women. Both colleges are led by members of the Science Faculty, with Hatfield College also demonstrating a strong track record for welcoming international scholars, with its Lioness Scholarship for women from developing countries. Ustinov is a specialist postgraduate college, with a diverse community of students from all over the globe.
