Free Doctor of Divinity Degree Online

A Doctor of Divinity, or DD, is considered an honorary degree granted by religious or theological institutions to recognize an individual’s work in ministry, theology, or a related field. On the other hand, a few organizations grant this degree online for free, usually in connection with religious ordination or ministry.

Long ago, in the United States, divinity schools, seminaries, universities, and religious organizations chose to award honorary degrees under this venerable title because of the honor it carries. As a result, the D.D. was virtually forgotten as an earned ecclesiastical degree in the United States. That is until Master’s led the way in its resurgence in 2004. Master’s groundbreaking D.D. program has been the model for other institutions, but other colleges have recently begun to follow our example.

Although this ecclesiastical degree is not meant to compete with traditional academic or professional doctorates, it is a degree that is earned. Things to Consider:

Legitimacy: Most of the free DD programs online are not accredited and lack professional and academic recognition.
Purpose: If your purpose is ordination or community work, these programs may suit your needs. For academic or professional purposes, one must have an accredited degree.
Accredited Options: More formally, an M.Div. or D.Min. from an accredited theological school would be a viable alternative.

1. Christian Leadership University:

Obtain an accredited Doctoral Degree in Divinity 100% through distance learning. Earn up to 50% of your Divinity Doctoral Degree through the combination of life experience credit and transfers from other colleges or seminaries.

The curriculum offering is inspiring and compels me to want to increase learning. As soon as I can, I will enroll to pursue a Master’s degree and Doctoral studies. I appreciate also that courses are offered on the internet, and bring the school into the 21st century, ahead of many schools.

Though this course is not 100% free, tuition at CLU is about 1/10^th of the average private college and about 1/4th of a public state college.

2. Southern National Theological Seminary

The Doctor of Divinity program is designed to provide students with an in-depth scholarly study of the Bible and its teachings and to discover how it relates to history and culture. This will include a thorough research of other world religions, and how those religions have historically played, and continue to play a key role in the cultures and societies in which they are common.

Degree Requirement: 60 credits

3. Master’s International University of Divinity

This is a competency-based upper-level ecclesiastical doctorate open to qualified senior clergy. Acceptance into this program is based on actual accomplishments. The process of earning the degree involves a demonstration of what is already known, what is currently being done, and validation of Biblical competency in the Old Testament, New Testament, and Theology.

The Doctor of Divinity Program – 30 Credits
